What is Machine Translation Post-Editing (MTPE)?
Defining MTPE
According to the Standard on Post-editing of Machine Translation Output ISO 18587:2017, Post-Editing is the correction and editing of machine translation (MT) output. Furthermore, Full Post-editing is the process of postediting that obtains a product comparable to a product obtained by human translation and localization.
Let’s move away from technical terminology and visualize the example of a house.
You’ve just bought yourself a new home, the hard work starts now. You need to add small touches to give the impression that someone made a life here. That added layer of lifestyle, that’s exactly what MTPE does to machine translated text. It breathes life into it, with an expert human touch.
LPE: “Every Friday at 11, we will have our meeting with the marketing and localization teams.”
If the above sentence sounds like it’s been taken straight from your source text, then you might only need Light Post-Editing. LPE is perfect for texts that circulate within your own organization. Essentially, texts that aren’t open to emotional
interpretation. In the language of localization specialists, Light-Post Editing is the quality level achieved when a human post-editor makes the minimum corrections to the translation output produced by the machine translation engine to make the text understandable.
FPE: “Our brand new “SyntaxMania” grammar app will be available for digital download on both iOS and Android next week! Users in the MENA region can benefit from a custom UX/UI theme if they download it today!”
As you can see, there’s software industry-specific terminology that might need a magical human touch to make sure it reads perfectly for the target demographic.
Full Post-Editing is an all-encompassing thorough edit that focuses on making sure the text sounds human through style and subtle nuances that a machine would not be able to correctly translate without the help of a human.
The level of MTPE that you need is something that you define yourselves depending on your use case. Our role is to help you meet your deadlines, budget, and quality expectations. Loyal to the ISO 18587:2017 standard, we will provide you with the level of post-editing that is relevant to your needs.
The MTPE Workflow: Let’s guide you through the process!
Let’s imagine that you are a Forex company and have a bulk of financial reports, repetitive content with technical language and short sentences. This is a good use case to start. So, how will we treat your data-sensitive content in the MTPE process to meet your budget, deadline and quality expectations? We shed some light below.
PHASE 1
In the first phase, your source text goes through pre-editing, where our language experts prepare it for machine processing.
PHASE 2
Translation Memory makes its appearance in the second phase. The database of stored texts automatically translates any identical segments it.has come across before.
PHASE 3
The untranslated segments go through Machine Translation. The output is a 100% translated hybrid text. However, there are machine errors that need to be adjusted by our team.
PHASE 4
We thank the machine for its services, but this is the phase our language experts come in. They perform the post-editing phase, turning the MT’s hybrid text into a 100% translated target text, with an added human touch.
PHASE 5
The final phase, error annotation, this is how we can evaluate the machine translation engine. And this is how it gets improved! And for sure, no workflow ends without a QA. Our QA team performs the final review, correcting any language issues that might have slipped by undetected. Once this phase is complete, your text is ready to go!

Benefits of MTPE
The Numbers Don’t Lie!
Previously, low-budget translations were equated with poor quality translations. MTPE has managed to make low-budget not only look better, but also be equal in quality to ISO standards.
